A Brief History of the Couch
Up until the 1900s, the word "couch" referred to a long upholstered piece of furniture that was curved up at one end, somewhat like today's chaise lounges. Couches were mainly used for sleeping purposes, although the expression "fainting couch" is quite literal. For many years, women who wore tight corsets were obliged to sit down constantly to catch their breath, and often they even passed out. Early couches were considered the ideal pieces of furniture for this purpose.

Couches Today
Not until the era of industrialization did the couch make its appearance in American homes, and with the popularization of television in the 1940s and 1950s the couch gradually became a staple. The leather couch made its appearance late in the 19th century and was, at the time, the epitome of luxury and class.

Nowadays, due to advances in technology that have led to more affordable leather blends as well as more sophisticated upholstery techniques, the leather couch is much more affordable to the average person than it once was. The leather couch, while not as distinguished a symbol of taste and money as it once was, is nonetheless a treasured comfort in the homes of families around the world.
